Mental Covers 13: The Split.

It's a sad and strange day when not even the same person can get along with each other any more. Even stranger when the person gets up and leaves while remaining in the building.

Back in the early days of development, Mental was actually two minds trapped in one body. While originally they would alternate on who was controlling the body, I eventually gave the sane personality the boot by having him mentally killed off via origin story. After rebooting it AGAIN, I decided to drop that idea altogethor.

You will notice that this is quite possibly where the quality in the covers begins to dramatically slip. There are still many covers to go, mind you.

Mental Covers: Joining The Team.

As evil begins to strike in stronger force, Mental is forced to join the only superhero team around, The Team!

This is just a basic idea back from what I know as the Second Stage of Mental. Back then there was a team called The Team (appropriately enough). They were comprised of 'Soda Mutants,' people who had been mutated thanks to a special chemical added into soda by Captain Mental's arch enemy, Dr. Mask (Nowadays, Mental dosn't really have an arch enemy). They formed a team, and after a while of serving as allies, Mental finally became a member.

The Team was comprised of...

Sparkplug: Teenager who can turn his body into a bolt of lightning.

Soundwave: Egotistical teenager who can change the sound of his voice.

Dr. Stone: Skilled surgeon mutated into a large rock monster.

Stabenslash: School teacher with Wolverine style abilities.

Spiderette: Sarcastic and angry girl who has spider powers.

Mystic: Psychic sarcastic, dry and droll teenager mutated into a floating blob.

Miya the Ogress: Unofficial member. A large green girl with enormous eating habits.

Mental Covers: Cyanide's my Pal.

The reason why remains unknown, but any time Mental and Cyanide are in the same room and are not beating the life out of each other is already bizarre. What could possibly make the two join forces?

Cyanide was another attempt at creating an arch enemy for Mental. Originally created for a fairly well done fight scene in my comic on Flickr, Cyanide was an alien blob who came to Earth to beat shit up, and was met by Captain Mental, my alter ego in this version. I manage to rip his head off, but the slime forms a mutating suit on my body and turns me into his second form. Imagine a full body hoodie with tentacles for arms and large teeth sticking out of the hood. Eventually the old Cyanide shows up again, having regained his old head, and is killed and absorbed by my suit, creating an unstoppable monolithic beast (pictured). It takes a retelling of The Devil Went Down To Georgia (and a falling plane) to remove the suit.

Cyanide's design in my drawings has slowly changed over time, and probably not for the better. Originally his head was much more humanoid in shape and was generally just drawn more intimidating.
Though still probably Mental's strongest opponent, I don't think I could bring him back enough to make him into the arch villain.

And yes, he is inspired by Venom.

Mental Covers: Inkblot

The death of a well known inventor and scientist garners the deserving attention of the superhero Captain Mental. But the case cannot be solved by him alone, he requires help in the form of Inkplot, the paranoid schizophrenic detective.

I used to draw a comic featuring me and my friend Ray, but I ran out of room to post it on Flickr, so I stopped. One joke Ray had a particuler liking for was a mad scientist who killed himself after spending several years inventing an item identical to a television.

I also had the idea for a comic starring a Rorscach expy named Inkplot, inwhich the hero is hired to investigate the attempted murder of famed superheroine, The Cape. I feel it was pretty good, but Inkblot eventually lost my interest. I decided to merge the two for this cover.

Mental Covers: Captain Heidi.

Fighting crime is a tough job. Not so much when you have super powers, but when crime also has super powers, things can get painful. So what happens when you run out of stories and your superhero needs a break? Invent a new power that lets him give them to his girlfriend of course.

Back when I was planning out the original series, Mental's powers were in his mask. If he took it off, he'd lose them and revert to his old personality, and stop breathing. Nowadays he's got his own super powers, and the mask is pretty much grafted to his face. Back then his powers also included reality manipulation because he was a rip-off of The Mask, I have cured this, though he can still grab weapons from nowhere due to his TARDIS-like hoodie. In this case Mental gave most of his powers, and she goes nuts with them and they eventually break up over it. Looking back, this wasn't a very good idea.
